This month, I\u2019m dedicating my writing to the human side of building, what it really feels like to be a Startup founder navigating ambiguity, doubt, small wins, and quiet resilience. Through four weekly articles, I\u2019ll be sharing stories and reflections from my own path and those around me, including the early days of OpenSource DB. If May was about Markets and GTM playbooks, June is about the founder behind the roadmap. The uncertainty, the pivots, the clarity that only comes in hindsight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Welcome to #JuneJourney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Navigating Uncertainty as a Startup Founder<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every founder signs up for uncertainty, some knowingly, some blissfully unaware. We all begin with a hunch, a conviction, maybe a blurry vision of the future. What we don\u2019t always realize is that ambiguity isn\u2019t a phase. It\u2019s the default mode of building something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Roadmap, Just Belief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Hari Kiran started OpenSource DB four years ago, it wasn\u2019t with a grand roadmap or perfect market clarity. It began with a belief:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open source databases, especially #PostgreSQL, deserve better #advocacy, #community, and #commercial #support in #India and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But belief alone doesn\u2019t give you direction. In those early days, there were hard questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are we solving a real, urgent problem?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will customers pay for this kind of expertise?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do we build a company around something this niche?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Much of the journey felt like walking through fog.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-0-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\"><em>And yet, one of Hari\u2019s core insights from that time, something I\u2019ve heard him say often, remains etched in my mind:<br><br>&#8220;<strong>Clarity doesn\u2019t precede action\u2014it follows it. And action, more often than not, begins with conviction.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving forward without all the answers<br>Instead of waiting for certainty, OpenSource DB chose motion over hesitation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We launched consulting offerings even before he had a full-fledged team.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We leaned into the PostgreSQL community, co-creating events like PGConf India, Hyderabad PUG, and Postgres Women India to stay close to real users and real problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We faced early rejections from potential clients, and mined those &#8220;no&#8221; conversations for insight, not just discouragement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This wasn\u2019t reckless speed. It was deliberate, step-by-step navigation, making decisions in the dark, but moving nonetheless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Emotional oscillations &amp; Quiet conviction<br><\/strong>Building OpenSource DB wasn&#8217;t a straight line. There were revenue dips during the pandemic. Hiring was hard. Scaling cautiously meant wearing multiple hats. And every milestone unlocked a new kind of unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yet conviction carried forward:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Building a human-first culture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nurturing long-term client relationships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Staying true to the vision, even when the business case had to be constantly recalibrated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What kept it together? Listening. Learning. Taking one more step forward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lessons for every Founder<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re in the early days of your own venture\u2014where things are unclear, messy, or fragile\u2014know this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You don\u2019t need to see the full path to take the next step.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uncertainty isn\u2019t a sign you\u2019re doing it wrong. It\u2019s often proof you\u2019re building something new.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Progress doesn\u2019t come from having all the answers, it comes from asking better questions and showing up, every day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To Fellow Founders:<\/strong><br>Whether you\u2019re building a product, a team, or a movement\u2014uncertainty will walk beside you. Make peace with it. Learn from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because sometimes, clarity doesn\u2019t come before the leap. It comes because you leapt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This June, honor the journey.
